I tried something a little different this weekend for my makeup.  I’ve heard several makeup artists combining more than one lash to create dramatic effects but I’d never done it.  I figured I’d give it a try.

FOTD Left side with double lashesI used Ardell #120 Lashes, which are currently my favorite lashes.  If in Texas, you can get them from H.E.B. I’ve seen prices range from $2.35-2.60.  I also see them at Kroger’s grocery store for $2.67.

Loreal perfecting base I purchased the Loreal Magic Perfecting Base last month when I saw it on sale at Kroger’s grocery store.  I’ve had my eye on this primer since 2011 when I saw my friend and fellow Makeup Artist Jennifer use it for a photoshoot.  The reason I hadn’t purchased it sooner is because it was a bit pricey.  Before last month, I hadn’t seen it cheaper than about $13.  That’s a lot to me, for a drugstore primer that I haven’t used before.

Loreal Primer on Krogers shelfHere’s a picture of it on sale at Kroger’s.  I started to get 2 of them, but since I hadn’t used it before, I decided to wait and try it out first.  I ended up waiting too long to try it and by the time I went back, the sale was over. :-(  I’m not sure why it was a close out sale because the product hasn’t been discontinued.  I even checked the packaging and it was the same as the ones that were regular priced.

Loreal Primer openedHere it is opened.  I like that it’s a pale pink color.  So cute and feminine. ;-p

Loreal Primer on handHere it is on my hand.  The consisitency is similiar to a thick gel.  When rubbed into the skin, it just melts and provides a barrier between your skin and the product. It feels similar to MAC Matte gel, but a bit thicker.

Overall, it’s not a bad product, especially for less than $7.  I wouldn’t say it’s the best primer I’ve ever used in my life, but I can tell the difference between wearing it versus when I don’t wear a primer at all.  My makeup blends better and my skin is definitely smoother.  I didn’t notice that much of a difference as far as controlling oil, but I don’t think this product is even geared towards absorbing oil so I can’t hold that against it.  Again, I’ll say I can notice a difference when I wear it versus nothing, but I do have to blot a few times throughout the day. I’m proud to report it didn’t leave a white film so it’s safe for women of color to wear without appearing ashy. *whew*

Even though I do like the color ( my favorite colors are pink and purple.)  I don’t like the jar.  I’d rather squeeze or pump out my primer.  Yes, I know with jars, you’re able to get all of your money’s worth by scraping everything out, but I prefer tubes and pumps because they’re more sanitary.  Unless I find it on sale, I probably wouldn’t buy it again.

BeautyByLeRenda Gordon Parks exhibitMacy’s has really done well with recognizing cultural events. This is second year in a row that I’ve attended their Black History Month event. Last year they focused on Romare Bearden. This year they focused on Gordon Parks.

This event was held at the Macy’s Galleria on Hidalgo.  There was a nice set up displaying Gordon Parks’s pictures as well as a live musician.BeautyByLeRenda Macys Gordon Parks Panel backgroundBeautyByLeRenda in front of Gordon Parks background BeautyByLeRenda Macys Gordon Parks event musician

I missed the beginning of the event because I was booked to do makeup for an event at Qwashae Boutique. I got to Macy’s towards the end of the panel discussion.

BeautyByLeRenda Gordon Parks PanelEach member gave info about Gordon Parks and how he made an impact on their lives. In this picture Rebecca Briscoe is speaking on how inspirational he was to have been so successful despite the racial tension that existed during his era.

To the left of her is Ray Carrington, he spoke very highly of Gordon Parks and emphasized how his early mistakes led to him learning lessons that allowed him opportunities to leave a huge legacy. He discussed how important it was for Gordon Parks to get to know people before taking pictures.  Then there’s Joy Sewing. Unfortunately, I missed her speak, but I’m sure she gave a lot of good insight. She’s very intellectual and full of knowledge.  I look forward to seeing her at events. On the end is David Parks.

Here I am with Rebecca after the panel discussion.  I’m so proud of her success.  We both grew up in the same home town of Port Arthur, Texas. Nice to see her doing well. :-)

This gentlemen in the above picture was the host for the Gordon Parks event.

BeautyByLeRenda David Parks speakingAbove is David Parks, Gordon’s son.  He shared a lot of great background information about his father, including how he and his brother approached their dad for assistance in producing the movie Superfly.  He also spoke about how diversity is still an issue in the film industry.  He urged film makers to work together and explained why family and the community and are keys to being successful.

I got a chance to sit down and talk with David Parks. He ‘s so personable and approachable. He was very patient and took time to talk with everyone and took pictures.  He appeared to be just as happy to meet us as we were to meet him.  I’m so honored to have had this opportunity.

David Parks and BeautyByLeRendaThere was a reception following the panel discussion in which Macy’s provided light refreshments and drinks. 2013-02-15 20.20.21

This weekend I worked with the incredible celebrity make up artist AJ Crimson and his makeup team at LeToya Luckett’s Lady L Boutique in the Houston Galleria Mall. We were a part of the Glam Slam Beauty Suite event that allowed clients to get a total makeover in one location. Teams were led by celebrity Hairstylist Kiyah Wright, Celebrity Lash Guru Jamaal Buster, and Celebrity Manicurists Skyye.

2013-02-17 12.38.20Above I’m with AJ Crimson wearing his Limited Edition Allstar Weekend Kissable Couture Lip Colors. I created a blue ombre lip. Below I’m with Platinum recording artist LeToya Luckett.2013-02-16 00.31.44

Words can’t express how grateful I was that AJ Crimson selected me to be a part of his makeup team.  This experience was spectacular! I was able to become more familiar with his Kissable Couture Lip Colors. I was introduced to his pressed powders. I also got to really work with the AJ Crimson Creme Foundations (which I reviewed a couple months ago here).  We provided makeovers Fri-Sun.

2013-02-15 15.04.50I’m holding the brand new AJ Crimson CCC palette.  It’s a convenient compact with all 8 shades of his Creme Foundation. I’d highly recommend it for makeup artist who want great foundation in a condensed form.  I’d also recommend it for makeup lovers who want to have versatility with creating looks.  You can do your overall skin color, highlight, contour, add cheek color, do lips, etc… So many options with this product.

2013-02-15 11.52.06Here are the Kissable Couture Lip Colors and AJ Crimson Creme Foundations and Pressed Powders. I really, really like his lip colors.  They range from sheer glosses to liquid lipsticks.  They all feel very comfortable on your lips without being too sticky or tacky.  My favorite is Fantasies, which I purchased 2 tubes at The Makeup Show Orlando.  It’s a beautiful red…but they’re currently out of stock so we didn’t use it for the event. :-(2013-02-16 00.33.35Here is Aj doing a lip demo

OMG! These lashes are amazing!! Can’t wait to try them on my clients.

I learned a new technique from Jamaal and his team this weekend. Instead of waving the lashes back and forth while you’re waiting for the glue to get tacky, just use a small hand held fan to quickly dry the glue.  He’s a genius! I’ve been doing makeup for 6yrs now, this has never crossed my mind. Totally going to get a little fan for my kit now. :-)

Yay! I met YouTube Beauty Guru Ateya. She was one of the first people I followed on YouTube years ago. She's super sweet in person.

Initially when I heard about Nicki Minaj being this year’s MAC Viva Glam Ambassador…again, I thought “oh, I can’t wait to see what color she’ll have this time.”. When I saw promos and the description, I was actually excited. My favorite colors are pink and purple. Since the color was described as a vivid lavender pink, I thought this would be a gorgeous color and couldn’t wait to see it.

After my initial swatches, my thoughts gravitated towards not believing this lipstick would work too well.  See below for what it looks like on my lips.

My expression should give you an idea of how I feel about this lipstick.

This was without a flash.  I couldn’t get a good picture with a flash. I kept looking like Tyrone Biggums from The Chappelle Show. :-(

At this point, I’m not at all excited about this lipstick anymore. Now I’ll have to blend it somehow.  I decided to try MAC Magenta Lip Pencil. I really want to like this lipstick and not give up on it.Viva Glam Nicki2 lipstick and Magenta pencil

Overall, I’m disappointed in this color but it’s not a total loss. It’s highly unlikely I would wear this alone or apply it on anyone else alone.  Other options would be NYX Purple Rain lip liner, MAC Dervish, Soar, Whirl, Absolutely It, Vino, & Currant Lip Pencils. Keep in mind it’s for a good cause since 100% of the proceeds go to the MAC AIDS fund.  For example, with the purchase of this one lipstick, MAC can provide up to 4 bags of groceries for 2 people effected by HIV/AIDS.

If you are a huge MAC fan and love getting all of the newest products, just play around with this lipstick until you find your comfort zone.  Also keep in mind the Viva Glam Nicki 2 also comes in a lipglass that’s a whole lot easier to wear.

    Black Opal Heatwave lipstick

Black Opal Heatwave Lipstick closeHere’s a swatch on my hand with a flashBlack Opal Heatwave lipstick swatch with flashDSCF8463I really, really like this lipstick. I’m happy with both the color and the texture.  I couldn’t tell from just looking at it, but there’s a bit of shimmer but not enough to make it frosty.  It glides on really smooth and feels hydrating on my lips. I know I’ll have to get a full size soon.  Sending this free sample was a good idea from Black Opal.
